Hi
It's Valentine's Day this Saturday (as if you needed reminding!). Have you ever wondered where this tradition originated? There are several ideas of where this tradition of giving gifts and love token's began, here are two which I found on Wikapedia:
In Roman times, the 14th of February was the day before the beginning of the Feast of Lupercal. This was the day when, to mark the spring festival, young men and women used to find partners through a kind of "lottery". They would all put their names into a box and then the names would be pulled out randomly putting partners together. They would then have this companion as their sexual partner for a year! It was traditional apparantly to give the new partner a gift.
Another view is that in the 3rd Century AD, the Emperor Claudius II believed that his yound soldiers were better in battle if they did not marry and so he stopped them from marrying. A Christian Bishop, Valentine, was believed to have secretly performed illegal wedding ceremonies for young couples and was executed for this and later made a saint.
Whatever the origins, it seems that Valentine's Day is still the perfect excuse for expressing your love for someone special and we all love an excuse to be romantic.
