Hi there,
I was recently lucky enough to visit the Van Dyck exhibition currently on at Tate Britain until 17th May.
Sir Antony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was the most famous portrait painter in seventeenth century Britain, and has remained an influence on portraiture in Britain ever since. He was born and trained in Antwerp, but spent most of his working life abroad, first in Italy and then in London at the court of King Charles I.
Van Dyck was working through a period of intense political unrest in the years before the outbreak of the Civil War and painted some of the leading figures of the period. He is particularly known for his portraits of King Charles I who was keen to portray his love of art and to depict the power of the monarchy. However, amongst all the portraits, what really caught my eye was the jewellery the women were wearing!
There were some amazing pearl necklaces and earrings that would be just as fashionable today as they were then. Sadly some of these pearls would be a little beyond my budget (I can always dream though!) but it did get me thinking about some of my favourite pearl necklace and earring designs here and what to buy next to add to my collection.
Here are some of my favourites:
