I have just designed and started a really interesting project for a lovely couple wanting an engagement ring with a difference which incorporates special meaning to them.
They had done some research and came to the appointment with both this engagement ring:
where they liked the simplicity of the design and this engagement ring, where they loved the colour (rather than the way this ring was set):
and this engagement ring:
for the way the stones are enclosed within the arms of the shank as if being hugged.
Combining their initial ideas from their research imaging and having a look at different shapes and stone options, the idea was to have two main stones which would symbolise them as a couple.
The first stone chosen was a pale blue aquamarine as both loved the colour which was a common theme in the rings they liked, and they loved the association of a stone connected with the sea. The other stone chosen was a brilliant cut diamond, to help pick up the bluey green from the Aquamarine and reflect it in its sparkle.
On a practical side, to give the stones maximum protection as Aquamarine is a softer stone the stones will be set in all around rub over settings. This style of setting accentuates the smoothness of the design and continues the fluidity of the shapes.
The design chose is an asymmetric twist style shank which has tapering shoulders, these shoulders wrap around the two main stones as if in an embrace, but the shoulders don't totally enclose the stones, so still makes the ring feel delicate and open.
They both have children, a daughter and a son, and wanted to incorporate them into this special design somehow, so to represent them, a 1.5mm brilliant cut diamond will be set in one shoulder while a 1.5mm brilliant cut aquamarine will be set in the other shoulder - opposite colours next to each other.

I really liked this symbolism and the overall concept of the design, so I hope this shows you that all ideas are good and we will always incorporate special meaning into a bespoke engagement ring for you if you wish.
