April is upon us and so I think it only fair to look even closer at this month's birthstone and really appreciate diamonds. Diamonds are a fabulous gemstone and it is said that they not only help to increase the strength and love between people but, legend has it they are great healers for illnesses as they create balance and clarity within the body. We here at Harriet Kelsall have some gorgeous ring designs which involve this delicious stone and here is one of my favorite designs of late and it is in our ready to wear collection in Halls Green at the moment.
This engagement ring has been designed by Alice Rochester and she has created a stunning ring inspired by art deco designs. Art deco was an era of exciting innovation and was considered to be glamorous and very stylish, whilst at the same time being functional and contemporary. So, Alice has brought this theme into her work today and has created a beautiful piece of work to reflect this classic style.
This stone is a lovely example of how beautiful diamonds can be. It is a 0.44ct emerald cut E VS/SI recycled diamond measuring at 5.2x3.3mm and it has been set into an all around setting which sits nicely on top of the platinum band. The diamond is E in colour which is one step away from the top colour D and so it is very clear and it is also graded as a VS/SI which means that there are very small slight inclusions which is another fantastic reason to look closer at this ring. Diamonds are graded on their clarity, cut, colour and carat and this stone is near the very top of all of these. The stones are set in platinum which also helps to show off the crispness of the design as well as the whiteness of the colour of the diamond. The ring measures at 3mm in width and the top of the band around the stone but, when looking from the side view of this, you can also see how the band tapers delicately towards the back of the ring to 2mm. This is a great design feature as it adds a little bit more strength to the stone as it has more metal supporting it, it gives an extra bit of height to the stone and it also makes the ring a little more comfortable to wear as there is less metal between the finger and palm.
You can see from this view that the stone does not sit too proud though and so it is a fabulous ring for someone who uses their hands a lot as it is less likely that they will snag or catch the ring on anything during their daily routine. This additional height where the band tapers up to the stone is also an added bonus as it leaves a comfortable nook underneath the stone so that a flat wedding band can sit flush against the engagement ring.
Alice has also decided to add some shoulder diamonds to this design for an extra bit of sparkle. These stones are 1.5mm brilliant cut E VS diamonds and they have been grain set into small triangles to enhance their shape and to also echo the theme of art deco through the ring. With the flatness in the profile of the ring, along with the straight lines of the set stones, this ring reminds me of some architecture of the art deco era. This top view flicks back to an image in my mind of the Chrysler building in New York which was built in 1928 - 1930.
I think that this building is a glorious sight and I think that Alice has done a fabulous job in recreating this art theme through her jewellery.
I like this design as it is simple, clean and crisp with lovely lines of symmetry and the materials involved in making it speak volumes. I like that the diamond is set across the width of the bands as this elongates the finger and also makes the diamond stand out more. This would be perfect for someone who has delicate hands, who likes the bright whiteness of the combination of the materials and who loves that art deco feel in the design. It is a contemporary take on an old school classic and I think that whoever gets to be the lucky girl to wear it will be bragging about it for the rest of her days.
