Prince William has honoured his late mother by giving his new fiancee Kate Middleton the engagement ring that Prince Charles once gave to Princess Diana.
Prince Charles initially proposed without an engagement ring, it was Diana herself who choose the oval cut blue sapphire engagement ring. The central stone is believed to weigh an astounding 18 carats and is surrounded by 14 small round cut diamonds in an elegant cluster setting.
Diana's choice of a sapphire over the more traditional diamond paved the way for non-diamond engagement rings to gain popularity during the 1980s whist at the same time the oval cut and elegant design highlighted her simple classic taste.
Today instead of limiting themselves to diamonds brides-to-be can feel less self-conscious about breaking with tradition and choosing unusual engagement rings to suit their own style.
I am sure that the fact that is iconic engagement ring is once again in the spotlight will inspire a new generation of sapphire and diamond combination engagement rings. After all this timeless pairing is so striking and never fails to excite.
At present in the Cambridge showroom we have a great selection of ready to wear rings that contain both blue sapphire and diamond - some traditional designs others a little more contemporary - something to suit all tastes.
My favorite is this Fairly Traded 18ct white gold engagement ring below that like Diana's/Kate's ring features a classic oval cut stone, however the design is practical and simple yet at the same time very striking.
