Palladium Hallmark News

The news we have all been waiting for. Palladium now officially has its own hallmark, this will be compulsary from the 1st January 2010.

The below announcement can be found on the goldsmiths website:

'London – July 23, 2009. The UK Hallmarking Act has now been amended by Parliament to incorporate palladium as a metal which requires hallmarking. Having finally received official recognition as a precious metal in its own right, compulsory hallmarking of palladium items weighing 1g or over will come into effect as of January 1, 2010.

The first item of palladium to be hallmarked by the Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office London with the new palladium hallmark is a dish made by London based platinumsmith Tom John (Tom John works mainly in platinum). The dish which measures 100mm in diameter bears a striking chased and raised leopard's head in its centre, the leopard's head being the country's oldest hallmark and the symbol of the Assay Office London.

Dr Robert Organ, Deputy Warden of the Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office London said: 'We are delighted to have officially hallmarked the first item of palladium in London with its new mark and Tom John's attractive dish will be added to the Company's collection to be preserved for posterity.'

Beautiful Beaches

I was having a look online today and found this article, which was subtitled: some of the best places to propose in the UK.

Bearing in mind most of us are trying to cut back on our expenses it seemed worth a look... and I'm pleased I did! It really reminded me what a beautiful country we live in (although that's hard to forget when I'm working in our picturesque Hertfordshire studio!) and what beautiful beaches are not far from our doorsteps. I can imagine that some of these more secluded spots really would make a wonderful, romantic place for a proposal, even in the horribly English weather we've had recently!

Happy summer!

Fiery Engagement Ring

Hi all,

I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Michelle, and I am just coming up to my third week as a Junior Design Assistant here at Harriet Kelsall Jewellery Design. I studied BA (Hons) Contemporary Design Crafts at the University of Lincoln specialising in silver work and I enjoyed incorporating enamelling into my designs. During my third year my work was heavily influenced by the movement of fire, as my boyfriend juggles and spins fire staffs. So when looking at the ready to wear engagement ring collection in the cabinets here in Halls Green the first ring that caught my eye was the Red Candle flame inspired engagement ring.

1.40cts red diamond candle flame inspired engagement ring

The beautifully designed ring is bold yet elegant, made with 18ct Rose Gold complimenting the earthy warm colours of the 1.4ct pear shaped red diamond and contrasting with the icy colour of the platinum band. This contrast is also enhanced by the platinum setting thus making the diamond stand out even more so. The red diamonds is heat treated, as natural red diamonds are extremely rare and expensive! The heat treatment is a very clever process that Harriet has mentioned in previous blogs, using natural coloured cognac diamonds the heat treatment changes the surface layer of the diamond. Normally I generally favour more opaque stones such as star sapphires and moonstones than sparkly diamonds but this red diamond is truly beautiful and full of so much depth and sparkle. Harriet described the stone as:

'The 1.40cts pear shaped red diamond sparkles wonderfully with flamey red, cognac and burgundy flashes.'

When looking at this ring it is easy to see where Harriet is coming from when she says this, that fact that she uses the words 'flame' and 'flashes' being key points as it really does make me think of the flickering flame of a candle. As I previously mention the design of the ring is quite bold but there are some subtle design elements that make this ring truly elegant. I really love the way the rose gold echoes the shape of the diamond, and the subtle graduation of the platinum ties the band in with this shape. Also the way in which the diamond has been set also lets plenty of light into it helping it to sparkle in that firey way. Sadly I think this ring is out of my boyfriend's budget!
