The Kimberley Process and the RJCs inclusion of Zimbabwe diamonds

Greg Valerio reports on how worried he is about the Responsible Jewellery Council's support for diamonds from Zimbabwe. We, like he, believe that many diamonds from this country could be blood diamonds. The RJC are currently supporting the Kimberley process' inclusion of Zimbabwe which means that rough diamonds form the Marange diamond fields will be allowed into the diamond supply chain. There is a horrible history of human rights violations from these areas.

We are very worried that the RJC accepting these diamonds undermines their core principles of gaining customer confidence in the diamond and gold supply chain.

It is greatly alarming to not feel 100% confident that we, as an industry, are really are doing all that we can to prevent the sale of conflict diamonds when these Marange diamonds may be involved with human rights violations.

The Kimberley process seems to be falling apart. I do hope it can still be mended.
