Summer Jewellery Event - The Conclusion

 

I would like to thank all of those lovely people who came over to Halls Green this Saturday, (5th June), to visit our showroom for our Summer Jewellery Event and the classic car rally. The day was a massive success and we managed to raise a grand total of £353.74 which will be donated to the NSPCC. All of the money was gathered from our raffle, our children's jewellery making corner and our book club, so a great big thank you to all to who helped us to achieve this and I am sure the NSPCC will be very grateful for all of our support to their valiant cause.

We had a lot of visitors who came to see the showroom, some old and some new faces, one of which was our local MP Oliver Heald. It was lovely to meet him and he thought that the day was a big hit along with the jewellery!

The atmosphere in the showroom was lively, busy and altogether very welcoming. At one point I could not even see the carpet as there were so many bodies milling about, it was a fantastic vibe and it was lovely to see. For those of your who were unable to come and visit us, here are some more photographs of the day, starting off with our tiny talented tinkers.

Children's Jewellery Making

The winners of the Children's Jewellery Making Competition were, in first place, Melissa and in second place, Olivia! Well done girls you did a fabulous job!

Over in the Kent's Close field next to our showroom there was the classic car rally which was hosted by the lovely Richard Hale who is the president of the Letchworth Classic and Vintage car club. His team did a brilliant job of arranging the day and here are some classic snaps from the rally.

All in all, the weather was perfect, the company was delightful and the entertainment was fantastic! Thank you to the Hales' and thank you to all of the HK staff for doing your bit! Recent Commissions

 

Hi All

I thought I would share with you a couple of commission projects that I have enjoyed working on recently, and which had quite specific briefs.

Firstly this wonderfully dramatic ring,

White gold and sapphire engagement ring

This 9ct white gold, blue sapphire and diamond multi stone ring was commissioned by Tora and Martin. Tora wanted something which had an antique feel about it, but that was different and had to be a real statement piece.

Tora and Martin's brief to me when we sat down in our appointment was that the ring had to incorporate blue sapphires and diamonds, it was to have an antique reference but had to be different - more than just a classic straight band with a central stone, it needed to be big and have a chunky feel, as well as allow a straight wedding ring to sit underneath it without needing fitting.

First, the all important blue sapphire became the central focus - an oval cut 5.1x4.1mm 0.57ct blue sapphire was chosen to make a strong shape and colour statement in the centre of the ring. The sapphire has been set in an end only setting to allow more of the stone to be seen and allow light to pass through it and lift the colour even more. The sapphire's setting has been lifted so it sits on top of the shank allowing room for a future wedding and to slide underneath.

Then to add some drama and change the ring into more of a statement piece, smaller round brilliant cut H SI diamonds radiate out on short bars from the oval sapphire. Two 2.5mm brilliant cut diamonds set above and below the sapphire (at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock), and four 2mm diamonds fill the space around the sides. By choosing double four claw settings to hold the surrounding diamonds gives the ring that echo back to a more antique style and a little more fine detail.

The combination of the diamonds emanating from the central sapphire creates a large spread along the finger measuring 14.5mm from end to end giving Tora the chunky feel but at the same time keeping the look of the ring open and not overly thick.

Lastly to finish off the ring and balance out design and colour, a brilliant cut 1.2mm blue sapphire has been invisibly set directly into each shoulder of the shank, giving Tora and Martin the statement piece they wanted.

Another design project I really enjoyed working on and one that is a contrast to Tora and Martin's ring, was the eternity ring I designed for Tony and Jean.

Platinum and diamond eternity ring

Tony arranged a commission appointment as a surprise for Jean on her birthday to discuss the making on an eternity ring to mark the occasion.

Jean and Tony loved the idea of representing their children in the design somehow. First Jean thought about using all the Children's birthstones, which are Amber, Peridot and Aquamarine – but as the amber is very soft and would be a cabochon cut which wouldn't fit flush with the band, and the peridot is also soft-ish we decided it wouldn't be practical to use them.

So as an alternative it was decided that three brilliant cut E/D VS diamonds, two 2mm and one 1.5mm would be set within three symbols. The grain shape symbols representing the children - a sun, a heart and a star with the children's names Tom, Amy and Sam engraved in between each symbol on the outside of the 4mm wide ring.

I thought this was a lovely way of making a very meaningful and personal ring as well as one that is also discreet and practical.
