St Patrick (circa AD 387-461) is the most commonly recognized patron saint of Ireland. St Patrick's day is celebrated on the 17th of March each year across the world. It is not uncommon to see shamrocks all around and to see people wearing green to highlight their Celtic heritage.
Once a Christian holiday, it has gradually become simply a celebration of Ireland's culture.
It is sometimes said that St. Patrick's Day is celebrated because it is the day that the patron saint of Ireland, drove the serpents from Ireland. More traditionally, the date is recorded as when St. Patrick died on 17 March 461 AD. and has been celebrated ever since.
He is celebrated because he spent thirty years building and setting up monasteries and places of worship all around Ireland. Irish folklore tells that one of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) to the Irish people.
We are often asked to design items of jewellery inspired by the beautiful traditional decorations and patterns of the Celts that have been expressed in metalwork, stonework and jewellery.
This art form has fascinated both Celtic and non Celtic people for many centuries right through to present day.
Here are just a few of the beautiful Celtic inspired designs we have created here, perhaps they will inspire you:
Enjoy the celebrations!
