The bold and the Beautiful

The new July Vogue arrived today, and I was happy to see Uma Thurman on the cover wearing a simple white shirt with a big statement necklace - it's a style of dressing I love. It doesn't depend on being model-skinny, and has its own quiet drama.

Of course, Uma's simple white shirt is from Fendi and won't leave you with much change from £500, but the beauty of this look is that it works just as well with one from Marks and Spencers, and the simpler a piece is, the more often you can wear it. I have my eye on some of Purple Label's big statement necklaces, which work with shirts and dresses in the summer and then with polonecks in winter. Pieces like the amethyst fully knotted necklace, something similar in blue goldstone, or the aventurine pendant, whose green colour really pops out when worn with greys and other neutrals.

There's also some lovely pearls with simple grey tailoring inside the magazine.

Most of us spend a lot of time making our hair not look like that in the mornings (I chopped all mine off in despair), but if you look beyond that to the neutral backdrop and neck full of pearls, it's a lovely look either for dressy daytime occasions or, tweaked a little, for evening with a simple tailored dress. If it's something you're interested in recreating, we do some great pearl necklaces in different sizes.

This one is particularly good for this - you can either wear long or wrap around several times. Or, for a really lavish look, why not twist several necklaces together. If you make sure the colours of the pearls blend it will look like one more complex neckpiece.

When your necklace is this fabulous, skip earrings altogether like Uma did, and if you're following the look to its logical conclusion, notice that she matched her shirt buttons to her necklace. After years of looking a little old fashioned, matching suddenly looks fresh again, so accessorise with a cocktail that matches the accent colours in your outfit and have a lovely time!
