A Birthday to Remember

A little while ago I had the pleasure of joining Rachel one of our lovely goldsmiths in our workshop in Hertfordshire to learn a little bit about making jewellery.

Sadly I spent much to the time looking up at her with doe eyes not quite sure which order I was supposed to do what in! Luckily, I was not alone in never having made a piece of jewellery before... but by the end of it Rachel had looked after us brilliantly and we each ended up with a lovely sterling silver flat profile band.

In the end I decided to give my ring a bit of personal flare and decided it would make a lovely birthday present for my Mom.

This year is the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Assay Office has a lovely commemorative mark available throughout 2012. This lovely mark consists of an image of the Queen in profile inside of a diamond and circle, and it now sits proudly in my newly made ring!

I also decided to 'up the ante' and have some lovely hand engraving applied. In the end I decided to go for something a little corny, but something that would be a really unique present. My mom is a big fan of ladybirds, so I decided to draw her design incorporating a leaf and vine motif with a ladybird around the outside. To top it all off I chose to have a personal inscription added too!

It is incredible the amount and skill and time that goes into hand making even the simplest of unique rings and I can certainly join all of the people in our class to say 'Three Cheers for the Goldsmiths!'... What an amazing team!
