Dirty Gold

I know Harriet has already written a blog on Dirty Gold, but I thought you might like to hear the comments from Geoff Field (Chief Executive for the British Jewellers' Association) about the subject as well. The comments were made as a result of the huge number of letters and comments made to the BJA in response to the No Dirty Gold Campaign which is obviously working hard to make a difference and raise awareness of the dirty gold issue. (Hurrah!) It interested me particularly as I've been doing a lot of research into this as well and he's written this more succinctly than I can!! He said:

"With very few exceptions, we [the jewellery industry and members of the BJA] draw our gold from a "bullion reservoir" into which gold is continually recycled – sometimes many years after manufacture, sometimes just a few weeks or even days – and to which newly mined and refined gold is continually being added. The fact is that unless gold passes from the mine through a dedicated and audited refining channel to the manufacturer, with no use of recycled gold, no-one can give these assurances. Our energies should be deployed in ensuring that for new supplies of gold, the environmental and social impacts are minimised. This is the line pursued by three initiatives – the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices, the International Cyanide Management Code and the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance. BJA is a member of the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices and we expect to see a launch of their monitoring and continuous improvement systems in early 2008. Retailers and suppliers should be committing themselves to CRJP membership"

As I'm sure you already know we are among the founding members of the CRJP - but it's great to know the BJA are encouraging others to join us! The more people get involved the quicker things are likely to change, so I'm sure you'll agree that all this is really exciting to hear.
