As Alison mentioned in her blog last week this ring is one of our latest additions to the ready to wear collection, and it's currently here in Cambridge. Unlike the other rings I have previously written blogs about, this solitaire ring design is much more of a classic (with a modern twist). I have tended to be more drawn to dramatic designs, but I find this ring to be a very interesting and elegant choice.
The clean lines of the flat profile really give this ring a modern look which is accentuated by the 'V' shaped tension styled setting. The diamond has actually been end only set, meaning that the stone is much more secure than stones which are actually tension set. We will not tension set any kind of gemstone as the smallest knock is likely to cause it to fall out, so our setting is a great way to achieve the look but with added security.
What I find most interesting about this ring is something that I learnt from Alice since see has been in Cambridge. She explained to me about the way in which palladium is not mined for itself and that it comes up when mining for platinum, which also isn’t mined for jewellery purposes but for industry. The ethics behind this is something I find really interesting and I'm sure this interest will only grow now that I will be working with Alice more closely. I am also eagerly waiting to see the difference that will occur once Palladium will have to be hallmarked. Since July when it gained its voluntary hallmark it does seem to be becoming more known about and already more and more people are enquiring about it. From the 1st of January 2010 it will be compulsory for palladium to be hallmarked and I am intrigued to see how this will affect its commercial appeal on the high street and its value.
Another interesting part of the design of this ring is the 3.4mm (0.17ct) H VS/SI brilliant cut recycled diamond. We used the first recycled diamond in a ready to wear engagement ring a couple of years ago now and it's great to look in our cabinets today and see that this choice is expanding. I'm a great believer in recycling so it's fantastic news to me that we can offer this choice to our customers - it means that a diamond hasn't been mined for this piece for jewellery.
