Sapphire Engagement Ring

This beautiful sapphire engagement ring was designed by Harriet Kelsall and is made using 18ct white gold and stunning colour change sapphire with diamonds and lilac sapphires invisibly set into the shoulders to conjure an image of the night sky.

This ring caught my eye immediately I began working for Harriet Kelsall Jewellery Design and I was fascinated to see this rare colour change sapphire up close. It is lovely sized stone at 1.17cts and 7 x 5.5 mm. Being a colour change sapphire means that it appears to be a different colour under different types of light. This particular stone is deep purple under electric lights like those it sits under in our cabinets, which casts a beautiful purple glow onto the wooden cone it is displayed on. Magically, it takes on a bluer tone in natural light with a 40-60% colour change effect. This means that the very lucky lady who this is bought for will get to be wowed by this colour change everywhere she goes. The colour change comes about due to the atomic structure of the stone. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight or fluorescent light excite the atoms in a colour change sapphire, but artificial (incandescent) light does not. Sapphires are one of the few gemstones that can have a colour change and the more dramatic the colour change, the rarer and more expensive the stone.

This spectacular stone has been set in an elegant scoop shaped 4 claw setting, which means that the bottom tip of the sapphire is visible from the side. This also means that a huge amount of light can enter the stone and its glorious light effected colour change effect is showed off in the best possible way.

Harriet has designed the band so that it's rounded upper profile means that the 18 scatter set shoulder diamonds and sapphires can be seen from all angles. The shoulders hold four 1.6mm lilac sapphires totalling 0.09cts and fourteen brilliant cut round H SI diamonds. The band of the ring is just under 4mm wide at the shoulders and about 2.5mm wide at the back for comfort and a flattering tapered style.

This engagement ring which is inspired by the nights sky is perfect for the couple who have a romantic link to the twilight time of day, and would be especially magical if proposed with during this time of day when outside in a spectacular location.

This ring is truly unique and incorporates a gorgeous, rare and very high quality sapphire. Although unusual, this subtle design is easy to wear and I'm sure any girl would adore this ring for a lifetime.

Come in and see it for yourself in our Cambridge showroom in historic Green Street and we can show you this colour change effect under our daylight lamp.

Jodie xx
