Well the nights are starting to draw in now and we are heading ever nearer to our next yearly celebration - Halloween. I have been looking at a website called British Life and Culture by Mandy Barrow and have found some facts which may be of interest to you.
Halloween is one of the oldest traditions in the world, dating back 2000 years. When Christianity came to England and the rest of Europe, the 1st November was dedicated to all the saints who didn't have a special day of their own and it was called All Saints Day. A mass was performed called All Hallows Mass (Hallow being an archaic English word for saint) and the night before became known as All Hallows E'en. Over time this name changed to Hallowe'en and then the name we know today - Halloween.
From the 19th century this celebration has acquired a reputation for a night when ghosts, witches and fairies become more active. The colour orange is also linked with this festivity, as orange is associated with harvests and Halloween marks the end of harvest.
We have a lovely variety of autumnal coloured jewellery in our Purple Label range, including some beautiful orange pieces. Perhaps one of the items shown here will take your fancy or have a look on our website for more options.
Happy Halloween!!
