Learn about Profiles

Profiles are an important choice for wedding rings, but an understanding of them can help in your engagement ring design choice too as they will vary the appearance of your engagement ring considerably.

An engagement ring with a flat profiled shank

If you are considering a simple band for your engagement ring or a design with a flat consistantly shaped shank then you will have to consider its profile.

Unlike mass produced jewellery, there are actually an infinite number of choices for the profile of your engagement ring because each ring is individually handmade and the goldsmith can adjust its profile as he forms the band to suit you. Having said that, the basic shapes are listed above and fall into 3 basic types:- flat, D shaped (curved on the outside or inside) or courting (curved on both the outside and inside). Other shapes that are variations of these basic shapes are shown above but remember that each of our rings is unique and we can create a profiled engagement ring shank that is just for you/

Most engagement rings don't conform to a set profile as the shape of the shank changes around the ring, however it is helpful to consider the basic shapes as a starting point when thinking about your unique design.
