General Information on Marquise Cut Diamonds and Gemstones

The marquise cut diamond is one of our favourites here at Harriet Kelsall Jewellery Design. Its slender shape creates a beautiful and interesting effect in an engagement ring. It can be set either across or along the finger and in the latter case creates the effect of elongating the apparent size of the finger.

The marquise cut is a traditional cut (as is the emerald cut) which has had a bit of a renaissance in recent years - we find that the popularity of this cut is increasing and find that it is probably around the 4th most popular cut (after brilliant, princess and emerald cut).

The length to width ratio determines the stones shape and the range is generally about from 1.5 to 2.5 (ie length divided by width).

The marquise cut was aparently invented in france under the reign of Louis XIV and was supposed to represent his smile!

The cut's pointed ends and long thin oval shape is a wonderful and elegant shape for your engagement ring.
