General Information on Pear Cut Diamonds and Gemstones

If you are thinking about a dramatic engagement ring, then why not choose a pear shaped stone for it. Over the years we have set many pear cut stones into rings that have a contemporary feel and are often asymmetrical in design.

Traditionally used in pendants (because the stone is aligned vertically emphasising the tear drop effect), we have seen a rise in the use of this shaped stone in engagement rings that need a more unconventional look.

Any sharp point on any gemstone is a potentially vulnerable point and the point of the pear shaped cut stone is no exeption. For this reason, it is essential that the setting is designed to protect the points. The greatest danger to most diamonds is when they are being set, (as it is usually necessary to apply some force to the most delicate parts of the stone, ie. the corners) but the point of a diamond such as a pear shaped one would be very vunerable to every day wear if not protected. If you are commissioning an bespoke engagement ring, your designer will discuss this with you during your appointment and come up with a design that supports and protects the stone adequately.

Like the marquise and oval shaped stones, pear shaped diamonds and gemstones can create an apparent slimming effect of the finger if set in line with the finger.
