Learn about Roman Finishes

  • A rough 'just dug up' finish inspired by archeological finds.
  • A random indented finish that is enhanced over time.
  • A very durable finish.

General Information on Roman Finished Engagement Rings

We have produced a number of rings that resemble a finish that you might get if you had just found your engagement ring on an archeological dig. We call this finish 'roman' and the finish is best discribed as a very heavily textured finish.

We first thought about this finish when we were commissioned by someone who worked on archeological digs and wanted to put an aspect of their life into the design of their ring.

The surface of the engagement ring is distressed by the goldsmith totally by hand, using hammers or files or anything else he can get his hands on!! The degree to which the ring is distressed and the ramdom-ness of the finish are all part of the skill of applying this finish. The process is not dissimilar to ancient making methods. If you are considering this finish you can discuss in detail with your designer that overall effect of the finish, so that it will be unique for you.

This type of finish is not perfect for every ring design by any means and thought will need to be given to the design of the ring to accomodate it - in fact it would probably be best to start your design thinking with this finish in mind and design the ring to suit the finish.
