During your appointment you and your designer will think about your engagement ring's shape and setting style, whether it will be more classic or modern or even inspired by a particular design style or aspect of your life.
Your designer will sketch out possible styles as you discuss your ideas, and you may well arrive at your final design during the appointment. Sometimes it takes more time and so the designer can continue to do more sketches which can be posted or emailed to you to continue the process. (In this case we ask for a small deposit to cover the designer's time that is put towards the price of the ring when you are happy with your design.) Of course, if you decide we're not right for you, you can just walk away after the design appointment and you won't have incurred any obligation.
We draw all of our sketches freehand - to us this is more sculptural than using CAD and makes it easier to precisely specify subtle curves. CAD is great for companies that only use precast parts and just join them together, as they can preload the components into the computer and put together what the final engagement ring will look like in minutes. Proper hand metalsmithing has a sculptural element to it not like metal machining done by lathes.
Design Choices
In preparation for you appointment, why not browse our site and collect together a few ideas and information about shapes and styles that you love:
Shapes
As a starting point, you will need to consider whether your engagement ring is to be symmetrical or asymmetrical and perhaps whether the overall feel is to be delicate or more dramatic.
Styles
Next to think about is whether your ring should be predominately classic, modern or somewhere in between. We can design to a specific stylistic period such as art deco, Victorian, Medieval or Celtic and include inspiriations from your life and hobbies.
Settings
You designer will talk to you about how to set your gemstone or diamond. Choices include claw set and all around set and there are many others besides.
