The list of birthstones shown here was agreed by the National Association of Goldsmiths in 1937 after a long period of time where there were many different lists on the go. It was fashionable in the eighteenth century to connect different months with different stones, following on when people used to apply different colours to different months. Beyond this, there was also a connection between the seasons and different stones going right bact to pagan times. Whatever the exact history really is, your own combination of birthstones in your own piece of jewellery is a very meaningful symbol.
