November Birthstones

November Birthstones

Written by Chloe Drake on 4 November 2016

November birthstones are citrine or yellow topaz, so if you are looking for a present for somebody with a November birthday, either of these beautiful gemstones would make the perfect choice.

The name for the gemstone citrine originates from the French word for “lemon citron”. Citrine is the yellow variety of quartz and is available in a range of yellow and orange tones from light to dark hues. Citrine is number 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Natural citrine is a very pale yellow colour but it is very rare and citrine is more commonly formed through the heat treatment of smokey quartz or amethyst. The stone is mined in Brazil, India, Russia, France, Spain and North Carolina.

Topaz is number 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness. It is most commonly known for being blue, but it can also be yellow which is November’s birthstone as well as white, pink or brown. It is an aluminium fluorite silicate containing fluorine. Topaz is heavier than quartz and it also has a higher refractive index than quartz. However yellow topaz and citrine can be very difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. Topaz can be found in many countries including Sir Lanka, Russia, Germany, Italy, Brazil and many more countries.
