Spinels are beautiful gemstones that has been used for centuries and comes in a range of colours. Many years ago spinels were used and often confused for rubies; this was easily done as the colour of a spinel can be very similar to that of a ruby. It was only relatively recently that the large red stone in the Crown jewels was identified as a spinel rather than a ruby. There are some differences between them and this is what we use to tell them apart. A ruby will be harder than the spinel, it also has a higher density. A spinel is singularly refractive but a ruby is dichroic.
There are so many lovely rich coloured spinels that you could choose from in your beautiful bespoke engagement ring and these range from a gorgeous purple to a beautiful vibrant red. These lovely gemstones make a fantastic addition to a ring and are becoming very popular because of their beauty and likeness to a ruby.
