Being a goldsmith for a day

Written by Louise Newham on 12 November 2015

This week I had a go at being a goldsmith! It’s not the usual perspective I get to see of jewellery as our tools and materials are pencils and paper, not saws, files and metal, so it was great to be able to spend some time in the workshop learning to make a ring with a handmade setting. Everyday we see our two dimensional drawings transformed into beautiful three dimensional pieces of jewellery, but to actually be given some training in how they are made gives us a much better understanding for our designs and an extra appreciation for the skills of our brilliant goldsmiths. This one isn’t quite finished - it will need a polish and will be set with a beautiful lime green peridot.
