Oval Cut Engagement Rings
Oval cut engagement rings are on the rise, especially with the iconic diamond. Find out how to make your unique engagement ring stand out.
Engagement rings are a symbol of the next stage of your relationship. Not just that, but they’re also an icon of style, reflecting someone’s individuality. Thanks to modern movements supporting self-expression, channelling your individuality and straying from traditional images has never been easier.
And with that comes the emphasis on experimenting with gemstone cuts in engagement rings and jewellery. And we have one we simply must discuss!
We’ve seen it throughout 2024, and in upcoming 20205 proposals (we love an early planner). You might even already have seen it doing the rounds online…
The Oval Cut Diamond (and other gemstones.)
Elongated beauty
There are so many celebrities lately who are choosing them. My favourites include Hayley Baldwin Bieber and Kourtney Kardashian’s oval cut diamond engagement rings. They may even be among the first to spring to your mind too. Both are equally spectacular (a.k.a huge) and have their own individuality to them.
It’s no surprise that our customers are following suit and choosing this mesmerising cut too. And who can blame them?!
From a design perspective, it’s still soft like a classic round, but has a little something extra. You still have the iconic sparkle that comes with any diamond but not just that, in some cases, it gives the illusion of a larger stone. This comes without drastically increasing your carat weight (and possibly budget). This is achieved by the larger surface area, which fyi also elongates the finger!
As with any diamond, when selecting a stone, you may want to be sure yours has the right qualities. Our gemmologist April says, “Something to look out for is the ‘Bow-tie effect’. This causes darkening in the centre of the stone in the shape of a bow tie.” It can be quite prominent and could take away from the renowned white sparkle.
Gemstone Options
Oval cuts are by no means limited to diamonds- some favourites are sapphire, tanzanite and tourmaline. Depending on which you choose, you open possibilities to a large choice of colours. Sapphire and tourmaline, for example, both have a rainbow variety. Meanwhile tanzanite is a captivating blue with an interesting story. With each of these gemstones, the intensity and spread of colour stands out as it’s a longer stone. You could even choose a stone to accentuate the inspiration of your design. For example, soft waves for blue hued tanzanite, or vines and weaves for teal green sapphire, or a statement look with pink tourmaline. If opting for a coloured oval gemstone in the centre, the trilogy design is just as captivating. Especially if you decide on diamonds, where their classic white either side can highlight the rich tones of the central stone.
Design Details
There’s no question of an oval cut’s timelessness and sophistication irrespective of design. We know it’s a beauty that’ll stand the test of time, not just a current trend!
One of the appeals is how charming it is on its own; it has quite an elegant essence. However, subtle or even hidden diamond details in the side- setting, bridges- and band make the look even more impressive. Another popular choice is combining an oval cut with smaller stones, to create a trilogy style. Opting for oval over round means you have a beautiful graduation of sizes. The delicacy of the side stones also helps lead your eye to the centre.
To make an oval stand out further, changing the setting is another interesting option. Perhaps four talon claws or all-around setting? Or perhaps you’re more into a vintage look and would rather the oval in the centre with a halo of diamonds, to accentuate the sparkle?
Channelling your love story into your bespoke oval cut engagement ring can come in many forms. Cultures, travels, favourite colours, how you met…it’s endless. But rest assured, inspiration is at your fingertips.
