Spring is in full swing, the days are feeling longer, the sun is shining and it’s getting warmer every day. This article takes a look at the different design options to achieve beautiful and timeless jewellery using May and June birthstones as we make the transition from spring to summer.

May: Emerald

The birthstone for May is traditionally emerald. It is also the birthstone for the Zodiac sign of Gemini. Emerald is the only stone, apart from topaz, that is listed in all of the ancient birthstone tables. This gem is also an anniversary gift for the 20th and 35th anniversaries and as an alternative for a 55th wedding anniversary.

Emerald is well suited to a traditional style setting like this 18 carat yellow and white gold halo design https://www.hkjewellery.co.uk/ring-16385-micheles-emerald-and-diamond-cluster-engagement-ring

Or something with a more modern feel such as this emerald eternity ring, which also features the customers own sentimental stones.

Emeralds not only work well in rings but they’re great for adding a splash of deep green to pendants and earrings too. This pendant design is inspired by the iconic shape of the Sydney opera house and features emeralds as a reference to Australian waters.

The addition of emeralds in these beautiful earrings creates a classic look with a modern twist. The combination of 9 carat yellow gold and the vivid green stones offers a clean and crisp design.

June: Pearl

In the modern list of birthstones that was agreed by the National Association of Goldsmiths in 1937, pearl is the birthstone for June and is also the anniversary gemstone for the 12th and 30th year of marriage.

Pearls have been used in jewellery for centuries and have a beautiful natural luster and shine. These ivory drop earrings with silver hooks are the perfect balance between an everyday earring and a special occasion earring.

Due to their uniform size and natural ivory colour, pearls often make the perfect choice for a matching set of jewellery, such as this example:

May and June’s birthstones offer a number of different design options. Both stones are very soft due to the way they form naturally but we are able to advise how best to use them in a design by taking into account how they are going to be worn and how often. If you have any questions or thoughts about using an emerald or pearl in a piece of jewellery please do let one of our designers know and they can discuss the best option for setting and design with you.
