Engagement Rings: The Customs
An article about the traditions and customs of giving an engagement ring.
Traditionally the man both chooses and pays for the engagement ring. This is because the proposal was typically meant as a surprise for an unsuspecting “bride to be” (assuming she agrees of course). This gesture is still completely acceptable because it is classic and romantic.
However, times have changed and with the growing choice available when looking at engagement rings and with bespoke jewellery becoming ever more fashionable, the man choosing the ring is not necessarily a requirement. Looking at engagement rings and shopping together for that perfect ring is also perfectly acceptable. On the one hand, the bride to be could choose a selection from which the future groom makes the final decision. On the other hand, when looking at the engagement rings the bride to be may drop subtle or no-so-subtle hints in order to guide her partner in right direction, with the final choice remaining a surprise for the bride to be. Alternatively, the couple may pick out the final choice together.
Currently, it is also acceptable for the bride to be and future groom to divide the payment for the engagement ring. This is because getting married, as well as being a commitment to each other in terms of love, it is also a financial commitment, where both share all assets. It therefore may be prudent to discuss finances from the beginning in order to know exactly where each other stands.
Another thought that typically crosses the minds of all brides to be is where their engagement rings should be during the actual wedding ceremony. Traditionally, there are a few solutions to this matter. Firstly, you could wear the engagement ring on the opposite hand for the ceremony and then return it to your left hand once the ceremony has finished. This is why the engagement ring is then seen on the outside of the finger. An alternative is to remove the engagement ring from the left hand for the ceremony or the day, replacing it afterwards, again this is why the wedding band is then seen on the inside of the finger. Finally, some women simply chose not to wear their engagement rings after the wedding ceremony at all.
